North Lincolnshire Council took ownership of the 12.5 hectare estate following the abolition of Humberside County Council under the 1996 local government reorganization.
Baysgarth Park
Baysgarth Park was gifted to the people of Barton by Mrs Thomas Ramsden in 1930, in memory of her late parents and her brother who fell during the first world war in 1917.

Baysgarth Park is a safe environment for families and visitors of all ages to enjoy and appreciate its natural beauty. It has:
- Green open spaces for family picnics and playing games
- Baysgarth House Museum, a heritage museum, formerly Baysgarth House
- Baysgarth Leisure Centre with football pitch, swimming pool and indoor sports hall
- Bowling green which is open to the public
- Memorial garden to Chad Varah – founder of the Samaritans
- Children’s play area, well equipped for children of all ages
- Ancient trees, woodland walks and wild life
- Three car parks
The estate is now open park land in two distinct adjoining halves, well stocked with ancient trees protected by conservation and preservation orders. These areas are used to stage a variety of community events throughout the year.
Main features
Baysgarth Leisure Centre sits in between two main areas of the park with a drive and a new footpath leading from Brigg Road up to the main car park. Adjacent to the main car park is a senior outdoor football pitch used by local teams to play home league matches. There is also a small car park at the entrance to the main drive up to the leisure centre, which has a five bar gate for vehicle access to the main event area overlooked by Baysgarth House Museum.
Nearby is a single football goal and kick about area, which is popular with children all year round.
The children’s playground is a popular attraction for families and children. It was upgraded 2010. A new embankment slide was installed in 2015, replacing the old embankment slide which had been a well loved feature in the park for many years.
Nestled in between the leisure centre and the museum, adjacent to the main event area is the bowling green with its small wooden pavilion bordered by an attractive beech hedge. The bowling green is in constant use throughout the summer months by members of the local bowling club and members of the public.
Adjoining the bowling green is the site of the new memorial garden to Chad Varah, the founder of the Samaritans. Construction is planned to commence in autumn 2017 for completion in summer 2018 . Chad Varah was a vicar in Barton when he started the Samaritans, which become a world wide organisation with members of the royal family as patrons.
There are two main entrances and four pedestrian entrances into the park. The pedestrian entrances are from Brigg Road and Caistor Road. They connect to footpaths leading to the main event area, children’s playground, museum, bowling green and to the leisure centre, via an impressive avenue of tall trees. We plan to install a new perimeter footpath in the northern section of the park in 2017.

The park is the venue for large outdoor events, attracting thousands of visitors to Barton throughout the year.
