The Trent flood defence scheme will protect communities across the Isle of Axholme.

Flood defence across the Isle of Axholme

The Trent flood defence scheme will see 3.8km (2.2miles) of sheet piles installed along the east bank of the river from Keadby Bridge down to the M180 bridge. On the west bank, the defences will be infilled where there are low spots to bring them back to design levels.

The extensive flood defence will provide significant protection to the villages of Burringham, Gunness and East Butterwick, and protect communities across the Isle of Axholme

The project is funded with £13.3m from the government’s Northern Powerhouse Local Growth Fund, which has been secured by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) as part of its Growth Deals with government.

Location of works taking place

The first phase of the project will see work starting between Station Road, Burringham and St John the Baptist’s Church to the south of the village.

The piling will be installed using a vibration process to minimise noise and disruption to local residents. Work will be carried out in four phases:

• Phase One: from just south of St John the Baptist’s Church to the Take a Gander Pub, Burringham.
• Phase Two: from the Take a Gander Pub to the south edge of the existing hard flood defence* on Burringham Road.
• Phase Three: from the north end of the existing hard flood defence* on Burringham Road to Keadby Bridge.
• Phase Four: from the M180 motorway bridge to just south of St John the Baptist’s Church.

During construction of the flood defences, there will be some disruption for residents trying to access the river bank as sections of the bank are closed so the sheet piling can be installed.

*We will install a new capping beam on the existing hard defence along Burringham Road as part of the Trent flood defence scheme.
