Apprenticeship case studies

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

It was a good way to learn on the job, you get practical and theory experience while studying towards a qualification. I had completed some volunteering in libraries for the council previously and wanted to work for the council as I like what they stand for. I like helping people as the council helps the local community. Within my role I can help the council be more efficient in their processes which in turn helps the local community.

How do you think completing an apprenticeship can help you progress in your career?

It will give me a good idea of what the working world is like, I have gained workplace experience by volunteering at Brigg Library in the summer holidays. While at university I completed a History Degree. I did this as I enjoyed this subject. I thought getting the degree would open a few doors for me, but I was surprised that there weren’t many opportunities. I then looked at council jobs and saw the apprenticeship and thought this would provide me with what I was looking for as I like what the council stands for and realised the opportunities that could be available to me in progressing in my career.

How are you supported?

I am supported by my managers and colleagues who all want me to succeed and I am comfortable to go to anyone with any issues that I have, there are lots of opportunities for me contact people, everyone is very friendly and made me feel welcome and supported and put me at ease straight away.

What would you say to anyone who may be considering an apprenticeship?

If an apprenticeship is something that they want to do then go for it. Anyone can do an apprenticeship at any age. If you want to build on your experience within the workplace an apprenticeship is a good way for you to gain confidence, work experience as well as access support and training that will give you an advantage in your career.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

It’s easier to learn while doing the job and you get to learn more. It’s easier to learn than just being in a classroom.

What apprenticeship are you doing?

Level 3 HR

How do you think completing an apprenticeship can help you progress in your career?

The on the job learning is easier than being in a classroom because you learn how to use the systems which you wouldn’t get if just in a classroom. Gaining the qualification while building confidence in the workplace and being able to complete actual work experience such as answering the phone and dealing with any issues that occur.

How are you supported?

Managers and colleagues are there to help me as well as the rest of the team. Everyone has been really welcoming and I know that if I have any issues, I feel comfortable speaking to colleagues about any issues. My team is flexible in allowing me time to complete my apprenticeship work and are there to support me if I need anything.

What would you say to anyone who may be considering an apprenticeship?

Go for it, if you are successful, you will have skills and experience that you can take anywhere with you.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I opted to do the apprenticeship as I thought it would give me the opportunity to learn academically but also through my job role. I could transfer up to date, real life situations into lecture discussions which has been so beneficial throughout. I also feel it has also prepared me for the reality of social work and how my job role will look post-qualifying.

What apprenticeship are you doing?

I am doing the social work apprenticeship. I will have a BSc Hons Social Work degree upon completion.

How do you think completing an apprenticeship can help you progress in your career?

The apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to do the job itself, so I can put into practice what I have learnt in lectures. This has advanced my learning and meant I have had a better understanding of social work theories, approaches, policies and legislations.

How are you supported?

I am supported by having 1 day per week allocated to studying outside of the university, this has given me the chance to complete university work away from the work environment, which allows me to maintain a good work/life balance. The council have also supported me by offering me regular supervision, practice educator support and a bi-monthly apprenticeship support group, where all 3 years, across adults and children’s service meet to discuss anything apprenticeship related. I have also been able to continually go on training, both in house and external throughout my apprenticeship, which has enhanced my learning experience. The council also provide me with a wage, which allows me to continue to live independently.

What would you say to anyone who may be considering an apprenticeship?

Don’t let anything stop you. It can be challenging but it’s so rewarding, and knowing you have the support of North Lincolnshire Council makes everything easier to navigate. It’s a great way to grow and develop yourself.
