Lots to love about your parks

12 July 2018

We’re celebrating Love Parks Week from 13 to 22 July 2018.

In Scunthorpe’s Central Park, why not join the hundreds of others who pound the pavements at the weekly 5km parkrun from 9am every Saturday. You can walk, jog, or run the 5km and people of all ages and abilities take on parkrun.

Then on Sunday 15 July, the ever-popular bouncy castles will be back in the park for families to enjoy and we’ll also have addition lawn games including mini golf, snakes and ladders and much more.

Join us from 2pm to 4pm for a free concert in the park from Scunthorpe Concert Band. Conducted by Geraint Jones, the band will be performing a variety of popular music, ranging from classical to classic pop!

Then, on Tuesday 17 July, Heartbreak Productions will perform Midnight Gang. Based on David Walliams’ popular children’s book, this sold-out performance is part of the Power of Words Festival. Unfortunately, places are fully booked for the performance but there is a reserve list. Head over to www.northlincs.gov.uk/POW to get yourself on it!

In Baysgarth Park, Barton-upon-Humber, the official opening of the Chad Varah Memorial Garden will take place on Saturday 14 July from 1pm.

Chad Varah was the founder of the Samaritans in 1953 whilst he was a vicar in Barton. Brainchild of the Friends of Baysgarth Park, the Chad Varah Memorial Garden is part of the group’s improvement plans for the park funded by North Lincolnshire Council and funding body, WREN.

Chad Varah’s daughter, Felicity Varah-Harding, will open the garden with the National Chair and Chief Executive of the Samaritans and Cllr Paul Vickers of North Lincolnshire and Barton Town councils. Members of the public are welcome to join us.

Cllr Ralph Ogg, cabinet member for Safer, Greener and Cleaner Spaces, said:

“We’re proud of our green spaces in North Lincolnshire and Love Parks Week is a great way to celebrate them.

“Central Park is North Lincolnshire’s flagship park, and where better to bring a picnic and enjoy live entertainment and games with your family! Over at Baysgarth, it is lovely to see our plans to improve the park coming to fruition with the official opening of the Chad Varah Memorial Garden.

“Whichever park you visit in North Lincolnshire – whether you like to run, walk the dog, take your children to play or ride your bike – enjoy it during Love Parks Week.”
