Join budding group to make Scunthorpe and Ashby bloom

12 April 2018

The first meeting of the Scunthorpe and Ashby in Bloom group is set to take place on 19 April as part of a £100,000 investment to give the town a colourful lift.

Leader of the council, Cllr Rob Waltham, welcomed the first meeting of the in Bloom group saying, “attractive floral displays in our town centres and along the main arteries will bring in visitors and be a source of pride for local residents.”

Residents, representatives from local businesses and community groups are invited to join the meeting to help set up Scunthorpe and Ashby in Bloom.

The investment from North Lincolnshire Council will help set up the group and provide new planters. Volunteers and local businesses from the in Bloom group will then take the reins and be responsible for planting and maintenance.

The council will also be offering hanging baskets to shops in Scunthorpe and Ashby town centres for a small fee to further flower-up the town.

Cllr Rob Waltham continued:

“Scunthorpe is the county town of North Lincolnshire and has a strong history of beautiful parks and green spaces with Central Park, Kingsway Gardens and Woodlands Memorial Gardens all awarded prestigious Green Flag status.

“Scunthorpe and Ashby in Bloom will help to build on that history. We’d like to see floral displays on Ashby High Street, in Scunthorpe town centre and along the main roads leading in and out of the town, providing a warm welcome to visitors and residents alike.

“In Bloom groups work well in our rural communities with residents and local businesses volunteering and providing support. There’s no reason Scunthorpe and Ashby should miss out and I’m happy to get the ball rolling on the group and help see the town flourish.”
