With 87 per cent of under-fives in our area registered with the Imagination Library, the Dollywood Foundation has congratulated North Lincolnshire’s book-gifting scheme for being the most successful international programme.
The Imagination Library was founded by country singer Dolly Parton in her native East Tennessee, USA, to foster a love of reading among preschool children and their families. The scheme sends children under five a free book through the post every month.
North Lincolnshire’s Imagination Library programme has grown to become to the world’s most successful with 87 per cent of under-fives registered. In North Lincolnshire, we have sent out over 363,000 books to over 14,400 children since the programme began here in February 2013.
The Imagination Library has programmes across the USA, UK, Canada and Australia with a total of 1.1m children registered to receive free books.
Cllr David Rose, cabinet member for Children, Learning and Families at North Lincolnshire Council, said:
“The Imagination Library encourages families to share quality time and fantastic books together. This helps children’s language and speech development, and, crucially, grows a love of books and reading that allows them to thrive when they begin their school years.
“It is wonderful to see that the hard work that our Imagination Library team have put in to spread the word about the scheme has led to such a huge number of children being signed up and has been recognised on an international scale.”
Angie Harris from the Imagination Library’s headquarters in Tennessee, and Regional Director of the Dollywood Foundation, Helen Hastle, visited Scunthorpe to celebrate North Lincolnshire’s status as the worldwide programme leader. Helen said:
“What impresses us most about the fabulous work in North Lincolnshire is the high level of enrolment; at 87 per cent, it’s the highest of any of our programmes across the world.”
