Explore a Winter Woodland at Scunthorpe Christmas Lights Switch On

8 November 2017

Come and join us for the Scunthorpe Christmas Light Switch On on Saturday 25 November 2017. This year, Scunthorpe town centre will be transformed into a Winter Woodland for the all-day event.

Throughout the day there will be plenty of festive cheer up and down the high street with street entertainers and fairground rides.

From 9am you can browse the stalls of our Christmas market selling gifts and delicious food and drink, including mulled wine, German sausages and roasted chestnuts. You can also meet Rudolph and his friends with real reindeer in Clock Tower Square outside the Oldrids department store.

For those feeling a little bit more adventurous, why not have a go on the ice skating rink. Skating costs just £2 for children and £3 for adults.

From 3.30pm, Lincs FM will be live from Church Square, offering lots of festive fun – including a Little Mix tribute act performing live on stage – and guaranteeing a white Christmas with their snow machine.

At 4.15pm, Bottesford Junior School Choir will be singing outside Santa’s Grotto in the Parishes before leading a procession to Church Square where they will then perform on the Lincs FM stage.

Father Christmas himself is making a special trip to Scunthorpe from Lapland to turn on the Christmas lights on for us in Church Square at 5pm, before a fantastic firework display lights up the sky.

Thanks to Winterton Lions, your children can meet Father Christmas in his grotto in the Parishes. The grotto will be open from Saturday 25 November and then on Saturday 2, 9 and 16 December from 10.30am to 3.30pm. Meeting Father Christmas costs just £3 per child and includes a gift.

Visitors to Scunthorpe Christmas Lights Switch On can enjoy free car parking all day in any of the town centre car parks.

This year, we are running a school Christmas card competition for children in North Lincolnshire aged four to 11 years old. We’re asking pupils to design their very own Christmas card with a winter woodland theme.

The deadline for entries is Monday 20 November. To submit your designs, send them to Cheryl Smith, Civic Centre, Ashby Road, Scunthorpe, DN16 1AB. Be sure to include a contact number and email address with your entry.

The winners of the competition will be announced on stage at the Christmas Lights Switch On and be awarded a selection of prizes.

Cllr Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“We’re kick-starting the festive season in Scunthorpe with one of the biggest light switch on events in recent years. The town centre will be full of the joys of Christmas with entertainment for shoppers and plenty to keep little ones entertained.”
