Library services

Join at any of our libraries, and your membership will give you access to all libraries in North Lincolnshire, plus our full range of free online resources.

If you are aged 16 and over, you will be asked to produce one form of current name and address ID, such as a driving licence, or official letter, bill or bank statement.

The latter should be dated within the past three months, and can be presented digitally if signed in to an online account.

Children under the age of 16 will require an adult guarantor. Please contact us for more information.

You can also join online if you are joining mainly to use our online resources but not planning to borrow physical books at this time. You can update your online membership at a later date by visiting one of our libraries with ID and receive a library card.

The new North Lincolnshire Libraries app is now available free from Apple and Android app stores.

Our new app is the easiest way to:

  • Find your nearest library
  • Access your account
  • Renew your loans
  • Browse the catalogue
  • Access our ebooks and other online services
  • Turn your phone into a scanner with our self service option and check out your own books in or out without the need to touch public touch screens.
  • Scan a book in a bookshop to find out if your Library has a copy

The new app is the easiest way to stay connected and get the most out of your local Library service.
For further information or support with the app, please email library.enquiries@northlincs.gov.uk.

Sign in with your library card number and Personal Identification Number (PIN) to browse the catalogue, check and renew your loans, and place requests online. If you don’t know your PIN, please take one form of identification (ID) into any North Lincolnshire library and ask staff to issue you with your PIN, or email us from the email address on your membership record. For data protection reasons, we are unable to tell you your PIN over the phone.

Take a shortcut to our Facebook page, read book reviews or add some yourself, check out our events and activities, or take a shortcut to our local history pages. To do some of these things, you will need to create a username. Just follow the simple steps after you have signed in.

You are still very welcome to renew your loans or place a request over the phone or in person at your local library.

Automated notifications

If you have given us your email address or mobile phone number, we can now send your ‘item available’ and loan reminder notifications directly to your inbox or mobile phone. You can also set this up yourself online in ‘my account’.

‘Item available’ email or text notifications are sent on the day your reserved item becomes available for collection from your designated library.

‘Pre-overdue’ email or text notifications are sent shortly before your loans are due for return, and ‘overdue’ notifications after your loans are due for return, to prompt renewal and return of items.

Ebooks

We have a range of ebooks available for download – for more details please view our ebook information.

ou can also place a request for an item not currently in our stock. If the item is available for purchase and is suitable for library stock, we will consider purchasing a copy. There is a fee of £1.20 per item for this service.

In some cases we will offer to apply to borrow it from another library authority or from the British Library as an inter library loan, with your permission.

Inter-library loans: charges

We charge more for inter-library loans than we do for reserving items from a North Lincolnshire library because it costs us more to get items via this system.

We currently charge customers £6.20 per item if we use the inter-library loans system. It costs us between £6 and £12, plus postage, to get the item for you. It is important that you consider this charge when opting to use the inter-library loans system.

If you opt to use the inter-library loans system but do not collect the item we have ordered for you, you will still be charged £6.20 for the request, as we still have to pay the larger amount to the authority that we received it from.

Inter-library loans: supply times

We charge more for inter-library loans than we do for reserving items from a North Lincolnshire library because it costs us more to get items via this system.

We currently charge customers £6.40 per item if we use the inter-library loans system. It costs us between £6 and £12, plus postage, to get the item for you. It is important that you consider this charge when opting to use the inter-library loans system.

If you opt to use the inter-library loans system but do not collect the item we have ordered for you, you will still be charged £6.40 for the request, as we still have to pay the larger amount to the authority that we received it from.

Inter-library loans: loan duration

We have no control over how long you can borrow an item for via the inter-library loans system. Some items are also subject to renewal fees if you wish to extend the loan period. Some items cannot be renewed.

If you do want to renew an item that has been borrowed via the inter-library loans system, you will need to speak to a member of staff in person or over the phone.

Inter-library loans cannot be renewed online along with other library loans you may have, but you can email us with the details if you prefer.

Inter-library loans: why we offer them

Many books are unavailable to buy or only available as secondhand rarities, often at high prices, so we are very fortunate to have an agreement with other library authorities to borrow some of their books and to loan them some of ours, subject to availability.  We can also apply to borrow books and journal articles from the British Library Document Supply Service.

Most library services are free, but in a small number of cases there may be a charge.

Our main charges are:

Laminating (where available) per page: A5 £1, A4 £1.35, A3 £1.85

Microform copies (where available) per page: £1.25

Printing and photocopying per page or side of page: A4 black and white 20p, A3 black and white 35p, A4 colour 55p, A3 colour 95p.

Replacement library card: £2.20.
Exemptions: customers under the age of 19, cards requiring a change of name, lapsed members and stolen cards.

Requested items not in stock: £1.20 per item if we purchase it for stock, £6.40 per item issue and renewal for items borrowed from outside North Lincolnshire as part of our inter library loan service. Exemptions: children aged 0-15 and Print Disabled customers. There are no exemptions for items borrowed from outside North Lincolnshire as part of our inter library loan service.

Research: First 30 minutes free, thereafter charged at £14.10 per hour (North Lincolnshire residents) or £25.75 per hour (residents outside North Lincolnshire).

Sound recordings: £1.30 per item. Exemptions: customers under the age of 19 and customers in receipt of some income related benefits can borrow these items at a concessionary rate. Print Disabled customers and Home Library Service customers can borrow these items free of charge.

You will be able to use a public computer, subject to availability, in our libraries and hubs.

You will need to be a library member, and usage is free, for a maximum of three hours per day.

Pre-booking is not essential, but it is advisable in libraries with a limited number of computers. Please see the branch details for each library on this page for current opening times and contact details.

Customers are required to comply with our Acceptable Use Policy [PDF, 98Kb]

You will also be able to print documents in A4 and A3. There is a charge for this service.

Black and white per page or side of page:

A4 – 20p
A3 – 35p

Colour per page or side of page:

A4 – 55p
A3 – 95p

Wifi

We  offer wifi access at all libraries. To access the council’s wifi network, you will need to complete a short registration process to set up a guest account. Each guest account lasts six months.

To avoid disrupting other library users please make sure that any sound effects are switched off.

iPlayer

The law changed on 1 September 2016. You must be covered by a TV Licence to download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer, whether live, catch up or on demand. This applies to any device and provider you use.

You cannot use any library computer to download or watch iPlayer as libraries do not have TV licences. You can download or watch iPlayer on your own mobile device using library wifi, so long as you are using your device’s battery and are not plugged in to our mains power. For more details please go to Do I Need a TV Licence?

We can provide small deposit loans of books, large print books and talking books on compact disc to residential and care settings.

If you are an activities co-ordinator at a residential or care setting and would like to start receiving regular deposit loans from us, please contact us at library.enquiries@northlincs.gov.uk.

Initially we will provide you with a small ‘starter collection’ which can then by tailored to your specific requirements. Loans will subsequently be updated at regular intervals.

NB Some settings were receiving deposit loans from us until March 2020 from our Group Dwellings service. This has been replaced by the Residential and Care Settings service. If you would like to resume receiving deposit loans as part of this service, please contact us.

If you find it difficult to visit a library in person because of ill health or disability, you can contact the Home Library Service.

The Home Library Service will try and match you with a volunteer in your area, who will be able to visit you and bring you books and audiobooks.

Your volunteer will be able to bring you books which suit your needs and you will be able to keep them for a longer loan period.

Please contact us for more information or apply using the Home Library Service Application link below.

Home library service

The Home Library Service is managed by North Lincolnshire Library Service and delivered by volunteers. This service is for people who can’t get to the library themselves through ill health, disability or infirmity.

If you are interested in helping with this service the following information may be useful:

  • We follow the North Lincolnshire Council recruitment procedure when appointing volunteers
  • The names of two referees will be needed when applying to be a volunteer
  • As this is a lone working role, volunteers should be over 18 years of age
  • Volunteers decide which area they wish to cover and how many people they have time to visit
  • Volunteers decide with their clients how often they should visit; we recommend monthly
  • All clients will have an initial visit from a Librarian to assess their requirements and to obtain information to help with future visits. Relevant information will be passed to the volunteer
  • We train volunteers and introduce them to staff who work at their preferred library. We also give guidance on choosing books for other people
  • If you use your own vehicle for Home Library Service visits, you can claim a mileage allowance. You will need to be insured for business or volunteering use, and have an annual document check. Bus fares can also be claimed

Please visit our dedicated mobile library service page for details of when and where it visits.

Reading Ahead is an adult reading scheme aimed at new and less confident readers, and those people who want to get back into reading.

The scheme is supported by the Reading Agency and delivered in partnership between North Lincolnshire Library Service and Adult Community Learning.

It has proved very popular as a way of promoting literacy and helping learners with their reading skills.

There will be more information available when the next ‘Reading Ahead’ scheme begins.

The RNIB Library is an extensive FREE collection of audio books, Braille, large print, giant print and music, in a variety of accessible formats to borrow.

The library is open to people who have sight loss or print impairment issues.  If you would like to find out more, take a look at the RNIB Library web pages or ring the Helpline on 0303 123 9999.
