If you have care and support needs, the Care Act 2014 is used to decide whether or not you can get help from your local council. It assesses how your needs affect your ability to do things and how this impacts on your wellbeing. All local authorities must use the Act to show that decisions are being made fairly.
To be considered for help you must meet the following criteria:

If you are unable to do two or more of the following, you may be able to get help:
Manage and maintain nutrition
Maintain personal hygiene
Manage toilet needs
Be appropriately clothed
Maintaining a habitable home environment
Be able to make use of your home safely
Develop and maintain family or other personal relationships
Access and engage in work, training, education or volunteering
Make use of facilities or services in the local community including public transport and recreational facilities or services
Carry out any caring responsibilities you have for a child
If your needs are likely to affect one of the following issues, you may be able to get help:
Personal dignity (including being treated with respect)
Physical and mental health and emotional wellbeing
Protection from abuse and neglect
Control over day-to-day life (including over care and support provided and the way it is provided)
Participation in work, education, training or recreation
Social and economic wellbeing
Domestic, family and personal relationships
Suitability of living accommodation
Your contribution to society

After having your care and support needs assessed, you will be entitled to a financial assessment to see if the council can help pay towards your care.
